FAQ

How long has Mad Science been running camps?

Mad Science Wessex is a franchise of The Mad Science Group. Our programs are created by a team of professional scientists and teachers at our head office, in Montreal, QC. Millions of children in over 160 locations, in 22 countries have enjoyed our programs. Super Sian has been organising camps for Mad Science franchises for over 10 years and is excited about the first year of camps as Mad Science Wessex.

What is the child to instructor ratio?

The child to instructor ratio varies depending on enrollment. We always have at least one member of staff for every 8-10 children, depending on ages.

What ages are the camps designed for?

Most of our camps are designed for primary school aged children from 5 to 11 years. We can also run camp programmes for 11 to 13 years on request but these are usually on a contracted basis and not open to the general public to book.

Are different aged children in the same camp?

Yes and no. A few of our camps are divided by age, but, for the most part, they are not; To make sure younger kids feel happy and involved we use a buddy system where, if required, the older children who want to can help the younger ones. Of course we always make sure to set activities and challenges at different levels for each child, and our child to instructor ratio ensures that there is always plenty of help and capacity to ensure the older kids are kept challenged and engaged.

Who are the Mad Science camp instructors?

Mad Science Camps are led by our experienced full time staff with enthusiastic assistant instructors. Known as Mad Scientists, our instructors come from a range of backgrounds including college students pursuing an education or science degree, former/retired teachers, or teachers on summer break. Most have worked for us in our after-school programs and all staff have experience of working with large groups of primary-aged children. Of course all have also undergone an extensive background check and have Enhanced DBS clearance.

Before camp season we also ensure all staff receive extra and specific training on how to make our camp experience one that children will always remember, and that parents will know is safe and well organised. The main characteristic of our instructors is that they all share a love of working with children and the desire to share their passion for science and spark their campers’ imaginations!

When will you post your camp programme?

It's out now! See our 'Upcoming Camps' page

How do I register my child for a camp?

Go to our online booking site https://register.madscience.org/wessex/camp-register.aspx

How soon do I need to register to reserve a space for my child?

Some camps and dates fill very quickly, while some may have spaces available up to the start date. We recommend that you register as soon as possible, because space availability depends on how quickly everyone else signs up!

What is your refund policy?

For all camp registrations cancellations that take place up to 14 days before the camp is due to run will be refunded in full.

50% ONLY refunds will be given for cancellations inside of 14 days prior to the start of the camp - we often are under obligation to pay the camp-facility a facility-fee at that point in time. At any time prior to the start of a camp, you may transfer your registration to another child with no service charge.

If we do not get sufficient enrolment to hold the camp, Mad Science will make every effort to provide alternative camp locations, or you will be offered the option of a full refund. As parents ourselves, we understand that you may need to make alternative arrangements so if we have to cancel camps this will happen no later than 2 weeks before they were due to run.

Once a camp week has started we are unfortunately unable to refund any fees if your child is unwell or cannot attend for any reason.

Do you offer sibling or multi-camp discounts?

We offer discounts for additional enrollments. Check our flyer for full details.

My child has attended a Mad Science camp before. If he/she took a particular camp, will it be the same camp that he/she has taken before?

The camps activities are different at each venue each year so if your child is returning to the same venue it will be all new content!

My child has taken a Mad Science camp before, but I do not remember which one.

Call us and we will be happy to look it up for you.

Does Mad Science have a minimum enrollment requirement?

The minimum number of campers necessary to hold a camp is 10. Mad Science tries to inform parents as soon as possible should it appear that a camp will not reach its minimum enrolment. If we have to cancel a camp we will do this no later than 2 weeks before the start date was due to allow parents enough time to make alternative arrangements. On these occasions, we will offer priority enrollment in other camps. Contact us for additional information on camp cancellations.

What should my child bring/wear to camp?

Mad Science provides all the equipment and materials for both the in-class activities and the take home projects. All you need to provide is a child who is ready to have fun! Children should dress comfortably for that day's weather. We ask that children not wear open toed shoes to a Mad Science camp, specifically no flip-flops. Also, as we will be outside on a number of occasions, please do not dress your child in any clothes that you do not want to get dirty. You may wish to apply sunscreen or insect repellent, or send these items with your child. A hat and/or sunglasses may also be useful.

For full-day camps, we require parents to send a lunch and snacks. PLEASE AVOID NUT BASED FOODS. Please clearly mark your child's name on all items he/she brings to the camp. Please bear in mind that we cannot guarantee to have a fridge to store lunches in.

Medical Information about your Camper

Prior to actual attendance at a Mad Science full-day summer camp, we require certain medical information from you regarding your camper. This is to assist the camp instructor with knowledge of specific considerations for your camper.

You must be aware that all summer-camp activities involve some risk, and, by registering for a camp, there is an assumption of risk made by the participant. Mad Science is dedicated to securing safe facilities for our camps and using personnel and equipment that is designed to be safe. There is a first-aid trained presenter at every camp venue.

By enrolling your child in a Mad Science camp, you do agree to not hold Mad Science Group, its Franchisees, Agents, Representatives, Facilities, Employees, Managers, Contractors and Instructors liable for any medical emergencies or conditions your child may experience, related directly or indirectly to a camp.

Do we accept childcare vouchers?

Regretfully at this stage we cannot accept childcare vouchers.  This is something we are actively looking into.
